East Walworth Parks get Green Flag recognition
At the end of July it was announced that 19 green spaces in Southwark have been awarded Green Flags for proven excellence in the management of parks and green spaces.
Both Surrey Square Park, and Nursery Row Park in East Walworth were new award winners.
This is fantastic news, and we are delighted that green spaces in our ward are being recognised.
Nursery Row Park will be celebrating with a flag raising event on 27 September, and Surrey Square Park’s win will be celebrated in the coming months. We will keep you up to date with more details.
Healthy Communities Scrutiny Committee update
On Tuesday night the first Healthy Communities Scrutiny Committee meeting since the election took place.
Since the days of the Health, Adult Social Care, Communities and Citizenship Committee, we have made a couple of changes.
The first being the name of the Committee.
Healthy Communities succinctly sums up what we are about – ensuring the health of the residents of Southwark is at the highest levels.
The Committee has responsibility for health, public health, adult social care, communities and leisure – although as you will see as you read further down, we encompass an even wider range of topics!
The second is the membership of the Committee.
Councillor David Noakes continues as Vice Chair of the Committee, and I am looking forward to another year of working closely together to deliver some great scrutiny reports.
We also welcome to the Committee, Councillor Jasmine Ali, Councillor Bill Williams, Councillor Kath Whittam, Councillor Paul Fleming and Councillor Maria Linforth-Hall.
All are a great asset to the committee and I am very excited about our programme of activity for the coming year.
In terms of the inquiries for the year, we are going to be considering three areas:
- Public Health Commission – a one day scrutiny into the Public Health function of the Council
- Personalisation & Safeguarding – looking into how personal budgets are working for our residents, and how we can make these even more effective
- Healthy Communities – aptly named after our committee, and looking into what affects the health of our communities, from our leisure facilities, transport services, community safety concerns, the financial health of the borough, and things affecting our physical health.
As the role of scrutiny grows ever more important, we also wanted to make sure that participation from Southwark residents and those with an interest in Southwark is recognised and encouraged.
We are going to be going out into our communities to speak to people about their experiences – look out for us at Community Councils and on your local high streets.
I am now working with the Committee to refine our Terms of Reference, and over the next couple of weeks we will be issuing calls for evidence to our inquiries. We look forward to receiving back responses from all over Southwark.
The next meeting of the Healthy Communities Scrutiny Committee will be on Wednesday 8 October.

Helping residents in East Walworth
Just because the elections are over, does not mean that we stop going out and talking to residents in East Walworth.
We have been out collecting concerns and casework, delivering our new contact details so people know how they can get in touch, and thanking residents for their support during the elections.
We had a great response on the Alvey and Congreve & Barlow estates, and have been diligently following up with those residents who have raised issues for us to investigate.
Every 3rd Saturday of the month we will be visiting a different part of our ward, and if you would like us to come to your area, please do get in touch and let us know. We would be more than happy to do so.
We have also moved our monthly ward surgeries, where you can come to us directly with any problems. These will now take place on the 1st Saturday of every month (excluding August) at the Mardyke Tenants & Residents Hall on Crosslet Street, SE17, between 11am and 12pm.
And you can always contact us direct. All our contact details can be found on the Southwark Council website here

Southwark Civic Awards and Mayor Making
The new municipal year got off to a fine start, with the Southwark Civic Awards and Mayor Making taking place at Southwark Cathedral on Saturday 7 June.
In East Walworth, Lorraine Hilton, a dedicated member of the Bricklayer’s Arms Tenants & Residents Association received an award, along with the Kinglake Tenants and Residents Association, which was recognised for its work in the community.
We also had the very great pleasure of formally electing Councillor Sunil Chopra as Mayor of Southwark and Councillor Neil Coyle as Deputy Mayor.
We want to congratulate everyone on their well-deserved awards, and don’t forget, you can nominate local people and organisations for next year’s awards already. The deadline is 31 January 2015 and more information can be found on the Southwark Civic Association website here: http://www.southwarkcivicassociation.org/
